CNC Machining Services for UK Product Teams

When you need metal or plastic parts that hold tight tolerances and look production-ready, CNC machining is usually the fastest path from CAD to physical part. At SkillsProto, we run 3-axis, 4-axis and 5-axis milling plus CNC turning — so we can quote complex geometries in aluminium, steel, stainless steel, brass, POM and engineering plastics, and ship prototypes within 3–7 working days.

Whether you are validating a fit-check prototype, building a low-volume production batch or machining end-use brackets and enclosures, our engineering team reviews every CAD file for manufacturability before the first chip is cut.

Why UK engineers choose SkillsProto for CNC parts

  • DFM review included: we flag impossible radii, thin walls, deep pockets and tolerance conflicts before quoting.
  • Tolerances to ±0.05 mm on critical dimensions, with ISO 2768-m standard as default.
  • No minimum order quantity: 1 prototype or 1,000 production parts.
  • Multiple metals and plastics from stock, reducing material lead time.
  • One project manager for multi-process assemblies that combine CNC with sheet metal or 3D-printed inserts.

CNC machining capabilities overview

Capability Specification
Equipment 3-axis, 4-axis and 5-axis CNC mills; CNC lathes
Metals Aluminium 6061/7075, steel 1045/4140, stainless 303/304/316, brass, copper
Plastics POM (Delrin), ABS, PE, PEEK, nylon, PTFE
Max part size 600 × 400 × 300 mm (larger on request)
Standard tolerance ISO 2768-m
Tightest tolerance ±0.05 mm on machined features
Surface finish As-milled, bead blast, anodise, powder coat, electroless nickel, chrome plate
Typical lead time 3–7 working days for prototypes
Minimum order 1 piece

CNC finishing options

A machined part is rarely finished as-milled. We offer:

  • Anodising (Type II and Type III) for aluminium — adds corrosion resistance and colour.
  • Bead blasting — uniform matte finish, hides minor tool marks.
  • Powder coating — durable colour finish for steel and aluminium enclosures.
  • Electroless nickel — wear and corrosion resistance for steel.
  • Polishing / brushed finish — cosmetic aluminium and stainless parts.

Industries served with CNC machining

  • Automotive: brackets, jigs, adapters, suspension components and trim prototypes.
  • Aerospace: lightweight aluminium fixtures, test rigs and instrumentation housings.
  • Medical: surgical instrument handles, device housings and alignment tools.
  • Electronics: heatsinks, chassis panels, connectors and mounting plates.
  • Robotics: structural links, motor mounts, end-effector components.

CNC machining vs 3D printing: which should you choose?

Frequently Asked Questions (CNC Machining)

Q1: What file formats do you accept for CNC machining quotes? A: STEP (.stp/.step), IGES (.igs) and SolidWorks (.sldprt/.sldasm). STL is accepted for reference only. Please include a 2D drawing for tight tolerances or GD&T callouts.

Q2: What is your typical CNC prototype lead time to the UK? A: 3–7 working days after order confirmation, depending on material availability and part complexity. Express options are available.

Q3: Can you hold ±0.05 mm tolerance? A: Yes, on critical features that the geometry allows. We will flag any features that cannot reliably hold the requested tolerance during the DFM review.

Q4: Do you offer anodising or powder coating in-house? A: We manage finishing through audited partner facilities and include finishing in your single quote and lead time.

Q5: Is there a minimum order quantity? A: No. We regularly machine single prototypes for fit-check and design validation.
