Sand Casting

Sand casting forms a mould from bonded sand around a pattern, so the mould is destroyed with each pour and there is no size ceiling. It is the process for large, heavy or one-off castings, and it accepts shapes that neither forging nor fabrication can produce economically.

FAQ

Questions fréquentes

When should I use sand casting?

When the part is large, heavy or needed in very low quantity. Above about 1 kg and below a few hundred units per year it is usually cheaper than die casting because pattern cost is low.

Can you machine the casting afterwards?

Yes, and it is normally essential for datums, bores and sealing faces. We plan machining stock into the pattern so features come out on size first time.

How do you handle porosity in sand castings?

By designing generous feeders and risers, controlling pour temperature and where necessary impregnating or weld repairing. X-ray and dye penetrant checks confirm acceptability for critical parts.
