PMMA (Acrylic)

Acrylic is the clearest commonly machined plastic, with 92 % light transmission, excellent UV stability and better scratch resistance than polycarbonate. It is used for light guides, display windows, lenses and cosmetic clear parts, and it takes flame polishing to an optical edge.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

PMMA or PC for a clear guard?

PMMA resists scratching better and stays clearer for longer, while PC absorbs impact. For safety critical guards choose PC; for display and lens parts choose PMMA.

How do you achieve optical clarity?

By diamond machining followed by flame or vapour polishing, which removes tool marks. For light guides we also polish the edges that couple to the LED.

Does acrylic crack around holes?

It can, because it is brittle and sensitive to stress concentrations. We use slow feed rates, generous radii and anneal parts to prevent crazing around holes and slots.
