Wire EDM cuts conductive material with a continuous wire electrode and a controlled spark, so hardness is irrelevant and there is no cutting force. That makes it the only realistic route for hardened inserts, sharp internal corners, thin webs and features that a milling cutter simply cannot reach.
Cutting of hardened steel up to 65 HRC without annealing
Sharp internal corners with radius as small as 0.05 mm
Taper cutting up to ±30° for draft and relief angles
4-axis cutting for punches, dies and extrusion tooling
Submerged cutting for thermal stability on tall parts
Fine-finish passes achieving Ra 0.2 µm

It only cuts electrically conductive materials and it is slower than milling, so we use it where hardness or geometry demand it and remove bulk material by milling first.
Yes — that is its main advantage. Parts are usually hardened first and then wire cut to final dimensions so no distortion occurs afterwards.
Conventional cutting leaves a thin recast layer which we remove with multi-pass skim cuts. For fatigue or medical parts we schedule a final low-energy pass and verify with cross-section analysis.
