Black Oxide

Black oxide converts the surface of steel into a dark magnetite layer roughly 1 to 2 µm thick. Because it adds almost nothing to the dimensions and does not affect hardness, it is the standard finish for tooling, fasteners and precision steel components that need a protective black appearance.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does black oxide prevent rust?

It slows corrosion rather than preventing it, and only when sealed with oil or wax. For demanding environments we recommend zinc or nickel plating instead.

Can it be used on stainless?

Yes, using a specific process for stainless steels. It gives a uniform black appearance that is popular on instruments and marine hardware.

Why choose black oxide for precision parts?

Because it adds only 1 to 2 µm, so tolerances and threads are unaffected. Plating would add 10 µm or more and require oversize machining.
