Electropolishing

Electropolishing dissolves the surface metal ion by ion, removing burrs, micro-cracks and embedded contamination while leaving a bright, microscopically smooth surface. It is widely used on medical and pharmaceutical stainless parts where cleanliness and surface integrity are regulated.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Electropolishing or passivation?

Passivation only cleans the surface chemically, while electropolishing removes a layer of metal, eliminating burrs and micro-defects. For high-purity medical and semiconductor parts electropolishing gives a better result.

How does it affect tolerances?

It removes material uniformly from the part surface, so we compensate by machining oversize. Sharp edges round off slightly, which is usually desirable but must be considered on precision edges.

Does it improve fatigue life?

Yes, by removing surface micro-cracks that act as crack initiators. That is why it is used on critical stainless components in demanding applications.
