Polishing

Polishing progressively refines a surface with abrasive compounds until it reflects light cleanly. It is essential on mould cavities that must produce gloss parts, on light guides where scattering ruins efficiency, and on decorative metal parts where appearance is the product.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What finish do I need for a mould?

It depends on the part requirement. SPI A1 gives a mirror gloss, A2 is a high gloss, and B grades produce a semi-gloss that hides small defects. We match the cavity finish to the target part appearance.

Why does polishing matter on light guides?

Every surface imperfection scatters light and reduces efficiency, so light guides are polished to optical quality on the faces that must transmit or reflect.

Can polishing remove machining damage?

Yes, but the process has to remove enough material to get below the damaged layer. We start with the appropriate abrasive grade rather than polishing over tool marks.
