Aluminium 6061-T6

6061-T6 is the workhorse alloy of precision machining. It combines reasonable strength with excellent corrosion resistance, anodizing response and weldability, and it machines cleanly at high speeds, which keeps the cost down on almost any part it suits.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 6061 strong enough for structural parts?

For most brackets, frames and housings yes. Where higher strength is needed, move to 7075 or consider steel, and we will flag the load case in the DFM review.

Can 6061 be welded?

Yes, it welds well with 4043 or 5356 filler, although the heat-affected zone loses some strength in the T6 temper. For welded frames we often specify 5083 instead.

Does anodizing change dimensions?

Type II anodizing adds roughly 5 to 10 µm per surface, and hard anodizing up to 50 µm. For tight bores we machine undersize to compensate and state it on the drawing.
