RapidDirect Alternative: Own-Factory CNC and Injection Molding

Published 2026-10-27 · 8 min read

SkillsProto is a Shenzhen prototype and low-volume manufacturer running its own plant in Shajing, Bao'an: MOQ 1, ±0.005 mm on critical CNC features, 3-7 day lead times and DFM notes inside 24 hours. RapidDirect is the larger platform, one owned Shenzhen factory plus a vetted partner network across China, with instant online quoting and 1-day expedites. Both sell direct from China; the difference is who touches the part. Specifications and pricing change; verify on the supplier's own site before ordering.

How the two operating models differ

RapidDirect opened its first own factory in Shenzhen in 2009, added foreign trade in 2014, an online quoting platform in 2019 and automated DFM in 2021; ISO 9001:2015 followed in 2020 and ISO 13485:2016 in 2022. Its published structure is one owned factory plus a vetted manufacturer network across China, which is how it lists 700+ manufacturing centres and CNC plants in Shenzhen, Dongguan and Foshan.

SkillsProto runs a single plant in Shajing, Bao'an, covering seven processes in house: CNC machining, injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, 3D printing, vacuum casting, die casting and FRP composites. There is no allocation step, because there is nowhere to allocate to. The drawing is quoted, DFM-reviewed, machined, inspected and shipped by the same organisation.

One structure buys breadth and elastic capacity; the other buys a short, traceable line between buyer and machinist. The trade-off shows up when a tolerance is missed.

What RapidDirect publishes about its own capability

The figures below come from RapidDirect's own capability pages rather than inference. They describe best-case capability, which is normal practice: a headline tolerance is the tightest the process holds on a favourable feature, not a promise on every dimension.

CapabilityRapidDirect, as publishedSkillsProto
CNC tolerance±0.001 in (0.025 mm) on precision work; 0.020 in thin walls±0.005 mm on critical features; 0.02-0.05 mm general
CNC lead timeFrom 1 day3-7 days standard, 48-hour expedite
Minimum orderNo strict MOQ on CNC or molding1 part on CNC
Sheet metal0.008 in thin walls, 3-day standard lead timeLaser, bend, weld and hardware insertion, quoted per assembly
3D printingSLA, SLS, SLM, FDM, MJF, DLP, FGF; ±0.008 in; 1 daySLA, SLS, FDM and MJF, 2-4 days
Injection moldingNo MOQ, 0.005 mm tolerance, ISO 2768 defaults, T1 sample in 2 weeksAluminium tool 7-10 days, T1 at about 2 weeks; steel tool 15-25 days
Vacuum casting±0.002 in, about 20 parts in 15 days10-500 parts per silicone tool
CertificatesISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485, ISO 14001 and IATF 16949 across its sites and partnersDocumentation per order; your programme's certificate set confirmed in writing before the PO

A published CNC figure of 0.001 in is 0.025 mm, so SkillsProto's ±0.005 mm on critical features is numerically tighter, while RapidDirect's thin-wall claim is the tighter of the two, 0.020 in being 0.51 mm. Neither number settles the buyer's real question: what is guaranteed on this drawing, at this quantity, with this inspection report attached.

What the own-factory model changes

1. One engineer owns the job from drawing to shipment

Every SkillsProto enquiry is owned by one engineer who reviews the drawing, writes the DFM notes, releases the job and signs the first article. Questions about a datum scheme, a press fit or a surface callout reach someone who has seen the part, not a queue that forwards them.

2. DFM notes arrive with the quote, not after the purchase order

Quotes come back with manufacturability notes: open a ±0.01 mm callout to ±0.05 mm where the feature is non-functional, add a relief so a 5-axis setup collapses into 3-axis, or thicken a 0.8 mm wall to 1.2 mm to stop chatter. The buyer prices each change before committing. RapidDirect also runs DFM checks, automated at upload and engineer-reviewed, which is faster on a straightforward part.

3. Tolerance is agreed per feature, not carried as one headline number

SkillsProto quotes a tolerance map: critical features at ±0.005 mm, general dimensions to ISO 2768-m, and a note where a callout drives cost without adding function. That map is what the inspection report is written against, and it is why a second order matches the first.

When another supplier is the better choice

Some projects are the wrong first call for SkillsProto, and saying so costs less than a bad first order.

Choose RapidDirect when the order needs PCB fabrication or assembly alongside mechanical parts, when a programme demands ISO 13485 or IATF 16949 on file before the PO, when you need a price in the browser before speaking to anyone, or when a single day of lead time decides the launch date. Breadth is real, and factory intimacy does not replace a capability that is absent in house.

Choose a domestic supplier when the part is a weldment beyond normal machining envelopes, when EN 10204 3.1 certificates and zero import duty outrank unit price, or when the programme needs a nearby audit.

How to run a fair comparison

Send both suppliers the same package on the same day: STEP files, a PDF with tolerances and finishes called out, the quantity and the date needed. Ignore the headline tolerance and check which features are held at what value, what the DFM notes would change, and what happens to the date if one dimension needs a rework loop. For prototype work, weight drawing fit and schedule confidence above unit price; for repeat production the weights invert.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SkillsProto a reseller or partner of RapidDirect?

No. SkillsProto is an independent manufacturer, Shenzhen Skills Proto Technology Co., Ltd., running its own plant in Shajing, Bao'an. It does not resell, broker or forward work to RapidDirect, and the two companies have no commercial relationship.

Can SkillsProto match a 1-day CNC lead time?

Partly. Standard lead time is 3-7 days, and a 48-hour expedite is available on simple parts when material is in stock. If the launch depends on a single day, RapidDirect's published 1-day service is the more realistic option.

Which supplier is cheaper for 100 aluminium parts?

SkillsProto does not publish or estimate competitor pricing, and any article quoting competitor prices should be treated as out of date. Ask both for a quote on the same drawing package, then compare landed cost: freight, duty, inspection and your team's engineering hours.

Does SkillsProto offer instant online pricing?

No. Quotes are reviewed by an engineer and returned within 24 business hours, with DFM notes attached. That trades front-end speed for a price that reflects the drawing, not a template.

Can SkillsProto produce injection molding tools as well?

Yes. Aluminium tooling runs 7-10 days with T1 samples at about two weeks, and steel tooling runs 15-25 days. For 10-500 parts, vacuum casting from a silicone tool is usually cheaper and is quoted alongside the tooling option.

How do I move an existing project from another supplier?

Send the current drawing revision, the last inspection report and any process notes. SkillsProto returns a quote with DFM notes within 24 business hours, and on repeat parts the first article is checked against the previous report before the batch ships.
